Going back to June 2012.....

Yes, that is a while ago.  We did a Sunday School project and we studied water, soil and seeds.  The Sunday School kids did soil samples which we sent off to Virginia Tech for analysis.  The results we got were really good.  Lots of numbers and analysis but Farmer Hanson is happy!  All of his hard work over the past 5 years to enrich the soil has paid off.  The kids watered the garden and then created and planted their own garden of beans.  Totally fun!

We used a basic kit from Home Depot to set up a small garden area and then with help from Dads we moved the soil to the garden location and began our hard work!

We tried to protect our bean garden but some rabbits seemed to love the growing plants even with our makeshift protection.  We keep tending it in hopes we get some beans but I'm not sure that will happen this year.

I have been negligent with my blog! August 15, 2012

I admit it.  Events happened so fast and my blogging ended up on the back burner!  I'm going to start with just how great the garden is this season!  The fence and water improvements were lifesavers thanks to a grant through Extension Service.

We have two water hookups in the garden now at the corners.  This makes for super easy water access,  the water pressure is great and two people can water at once if needed.

And note the glorious fence!  Supplies were donated by Long Fence and Greenview Landscaping did the installation.  It has really helped keep critters at bay.  We have had no damage within the fence since it was installed.

So thank you Extension Service for helping with these two critical needs.

I love technology

Somehow i deleted my Memorial Day weekend post.....sigh! Here are the pics again.....i can't say i'm better at gardening than at blogging either!

Diana delivering her seedlings - tomatoes, chard, peppers....

Diana, dad Dave and Hanson admiring the chard.

Ted, Diana and Dave strategizing....

Hanson tilling the rows.

Ann adding our signs (again a thank you to Long Fence!)

Mother Jenny stopped by to check on our work.

And why would Hanson be standing in a wheelbarrow drinking a Starbucks? Why not?! Blame it on the heat!

June 3 Abundant Life Activity in the Garden

After church today, the kids literally ran to the garden to work! Actually, they ran for snack but i'm pretty good at deluding myself!

We tackled how to water the garden....we talked about rain, about the creek near the garden and then we searched for watering cans and water to water our growing plants....

Everyone agreed it is hard work! And we did a really good job making sure we didn't step on the plants before watering them!

Our work took supervision from some dads.....

So a quick goodbye until next week when we'll do soil samples to send to Virginia Tech for analysis to make sure our soil is rich in all the right nutrients. And next week i'll make sure i get pics of all the kidlets! Sorry Harrison!

The fence is fab!

Thank you Long Fence for the advice and supplies! And thank you Jim and Hanson for slogging out to Long Fence on just a miserable rainy day....

Hopefully this work of art will keep the critters at bay.....it's too beautiful to tamper with!

And we have a big gate to let the big equipment through to till the soil.

Welcome 2012!

Have you wondered if St. Andrew's was doing a garden this year? We definitely are.....this blogger has been struggling to figure out how to blog from one of the earlier ipads. Some things are easy.....everything else needs an app!

Over the winter leeks were harvested (50 pounds worth). We received a grant to install fencing and relocate the water line. Greenview Landscaping did a great job plowing the area and the soil looks great.

And we say goodbye to our invasive species tree! Our only shade!

Look at the clear view of HB Woodlawn parking now that our land has been cleared......If you look closely Hanson and Michael have planted a few items. This picture is about 3 weeks old (i mentioned my ipad challenged blogging skills!)
